Uber app will now allow riders to make free calls to the cab-drivers. The application previously used to give the call feature to the users but the passengers had to make calls through their cellular connection, but now the app has rolled out the VoIP based call feature for the Indian users. To recall, the feature was introduced in other countries for Uber back in October last year, but now it is being rolled out in India. The VoIP based function will mean that the call will be made over the internet from the Uber app, thus it will protect the phone number of the rider. Another advantage of this would be, that the call charges won’t be deducted from the rider’s cellular account. Much similar to the passengers, the Uber drivers will also get this facility thus allowing them to communicate with their riders easily. On Saturday, Uber users in India reported seeing the feature for the first time.

Uber Introduces Free Call Feature in India, Allows Passengers to Make Calls to Drivers Over VoIP

How to Use Free Call Feature on Uber

In case you want to make a call to your driver, then after you book the cab, you can tap on the calling button. A pop-up screen will allow you to choose between cellular network and VoIP to make the call, choose the Free Call option from the screen. The Uber app will now ask you to grant permission for using the microphone of the device. Tap on ‘Allow’. Once the call begins, you will be able to see the name of your driver on screen, along with it you can also see options like mute, speaker, and of course, there is the end call button. Another thing to note is that when you make a call to your driver using the Uber Free Call option, the driver won’t be able to see your name or number and the caller identity will only show “Uber”. The same will be the case when the driver calls you via the Free Call feature.

This new feature by Uber has multiple benefits. First is the obvious advantage of keeping the numbers of riders and drivers private. The app will also increase the ease of use as now drivers or passengers will be able to make a call without even leaving the Uber app. Additionally, in case you are travelling abroad and you do not have a cellular connection then the Free Call feature will allow you to make calls when you are connected to Wi-Fi. Also, Uber users should keep in mind that although the feature is being rolled, the standard calling functionality will remain as an option in the app.

Scepticism Regarding Call Monitoring

With the rollout of the new Free Call feature by Uber, there has also been some scepticism about Uber listening to the calls between drivers and riders. The access to the microphone might mean that Uber can be listening to the conversations. Some drivers also reported that they were unaware of the new change and did not pick up the calls thinking that it was someone from the company calling them.

Uber India Unveils Upgraded App for Drivers, Taking Their Feedback
In a bid to smoothen the ride for its drivers, ride-hailing platform Uber on Wednesday launched a new app that will initially be available to select driver-partners in Kochi and courier partners in Chennai. The app was built after experimenting with over 100 driver and courier partners in Bengaluru as part of the global beta launch. "Our teams spent time on-ground, interacting with partners through group sessions, ride alongs and in person meetings to gather inputs.
Every piece of their feedback was important and it was incorporated into building an app that meets their needs," Pradeep Parameswaran, Head of Central Operations, Uber India and South Asia, said in a statement.
The app will be rolled out in a phased manner to driver and delivery partners across the country over the coming months, Uber said. "Drivers' opinions shaped the app for the better.
After over 100,000 trips, thousands of conversations, and many bugs reported (and fixed!), we're excited to share the product of our partnership: a new app built for drivers, with drivers," Dara Khosrowshahi, Uber CEO, said in a blog post.
The app comes with an "Earnings tracker" to let drivers know how much they earned on their last trip, and makes it easy to track progress. "Status bar" feature provides real-time updates on market conditions around them and opportunities for more trips nearby.
"When a driver taps an opportunity, the app will provide optional navigation to the recommended area," the company said. "Notifications" feature lets drivers see messages about upcoming earning opportunities, feedback from riders and information about their account. "Driver profile" feature allows riders to learn more about their driver and find new ways to connect.

Uber Will Stop Tracking Riders; Offers Free Insurance To All Drivers In IndiaAfter ex-CEO of Expedia Dara Khosrowshahi took the chair as Uber’s new chief executive, Uber has started working hard to towards a fresh, clean start.

They were heavily criticized for the feature which allowed them to track the riders for up to five minutes after the end of a trip. World’s largest ride hailing service company is desperately trying to improve their poor reputation for breaching customer’s privacy.

Uber Tracked Users Even After The Trip Ended
Uber will ditch the controversial feature, and will ensure the location data is shared only while the app is being used. The new app update is expected to roll out on Tuesday, and will first be made available for iPhone users, starting this week.
They have lined up a number of changes in the near future. They are trying to recover from an endless series of crises with the exit of ex-CEO and co-founder Travis Kalanick and other top executives.
The new feature gives a new option for the users to limit the data gathering to ‘Only When App is in Use’, instead of forcing them to choose between ‘Always’ or ‘Never’.
Replying to privacy concerns, Uber said it needed the permission of ‘always gathering data’ in order to track the riders for up to five minutes after a trip was completed, which Uber believed could help ensuring customers’ physical safety.
Though, the new changes will be applicable only to IOS users first, the company will bring it to Android users at a later date.

This new change is a part of their ‘180 Days of Change’ PR Campaign. A series of new updates are being expected in the coming year to improve the privacy, security and transparency at the company.

All Driver Partners in India Will Be Insured For Free
Uber will be insuring over 4.5 lakh Uber driver-partners in the country in partnership with ICICI Lombard General Insurance.

They will be rolling out an insurance programme for all the Uber driver-partners in the country, starting on September 1. It will cover all Uber drivers under the insurance, aged 18 to 65 years for free. Presently, Uber has a similar offering in Indonesia and Myanmar.
In India, Uber is locked into an intense battle with SoftBank backed OLA for leadership in the market. They have claimed to have seen a massive 115 percent increase in number of the completed trips on their platform last month, compared to the same period a year ago in India.
The insurance will cover accidental death, disablement, hospitalisation and outpatient medical treatment in any case of an accident while the driver-partner is using the Uber app, i.e. for the trip request or en route or on a trip.
ICICI Lombard offers a coverage upto Rs. 5 lakh in the event of death or permanent disability, up to Rs. 2 lakh in the event of hospitalisation (which has a sublimit of up to Rs. 50,000 in case of a outpatient treatment).

In-App Chat and Multi Destination Feature
Apart from the insurance, Uber also rolled out their new set of features which includes Pause Requests, In-App Chat to enhance the experience for drivers and customers (customers don’t have to share their phone number) and Multi Destination Feature (in case customers have to halt at multiple points during a ride).

At the same time, Uber has also partnered with AISECT to introduce a WhatsApp enabled module, that will teach drivers a series of basic English conversational skills, which will help them to improve their ratings on the company’s platform.
