Buying New House? Your Wife Can No Longer Help You To Save Tax – This Is What Changed, Tax benefits waived off only if new property is in taxpayer's name.
Online Sale Of Medicines Banned Across India – A Big Blow To Ecommerce In India? As per Delhi HC, sale of online medicines is harmful for all Indians.

Buying New House Wife Can No Longer Help You To Save Tax (Online Sale Of Medicines Banned)

Buying a flat in the name of the woman in the house is a great idea, but only for a long-term investment. If the property is being bought with the purpose of trading, tax benefits will not be applicable: only because the flat is in the woman’s name.

A recent case in Mumbai was where this news was brought into the limelight. The Income Tax Appellate Tribune (ITAT)’s Mumbai bench denied a taxpayer income tax benefits available on a long-term capital gain (LTGC). The concerned person was looking to buy a new flat by selling the old one. But as the new flat was in the name of his wife, he was denied tax benefits.

Online Sale Of Medicines Banned Across India – A Big Blow To Ecommerce In India? As per Delhi HC, sale of online medicines is harmful for all Indians.

Here’s What Happened

R Gavankar had purchased a new, second flat jointly with his wife. He did not pay the tax applicable on the LTCG of the old house, on which Income Tax officials demanded 50% of the LTGC of Rs 17.5 lakh. Gavankar’s claim of deduction under Section 54 was denied. He was informed that to avail benefits of tax waive on LTCG under section 54 only if the owner of the second house was the taxpayer, i.e. Gavankar himself.

What does the Income Tax Act say?

According to section 54 of Income Tax Act, if you buy a new property within 2 years of selling an old property, the long-term capital gains tax is waived off the income you earn from selling the old property.

As per the Income Tax Act, if you buy and hold a residential property for a minimum of two years before selling it, the profit earned on that property is called long-term capital gain. After the adjustment for inflation (indexation Benefit), this gain is taxable at 20%. But, if this profit is used in a transaction to buy a new property, the tax is waived off. Clearly, the amount not used in buying the new property is taxable.

Expert’s Advice:

Puneet Gupta, Director at People Advisory Services said that the taxpayers who fall under the jurisdiction of Bombay High Court must be careful to avoid tax litigation. If a taxpayer is looking to buy a house in the name of their children or spouse, it would be good sense to include their own name in the registration as well. In simple words, if a property is bought under the joint names of the taxpayer and his spouse and/or children, then the tax will be waived off of one third the cost of the new property bought.

Some more things to remember:

  • A social initiative to empower women enables them to buy a property under their own name at a 2 % lower transaction cost.
  • If the property is in the name of a close relative (son/daughter/wife) who is not earning, and if the property is let out or on rent, the rental income from this property will be treated as the husband’s income and will be applicable to tax at a normal rate.
  • If you purchase a house in the name of the wife but use your own funds, this means you are using her name as name lender and is considered illegal.
  • You can make this legal by gifting the money to your wife for her to be able to buy said property. But, this requires the property income to be added to your income and will be taxable.
  • A loophole in this is to loan your wife the money in exchange for her jewelry of the same amount. In such cases, the rent from the property will not be applicable to you.
  • The wife may not be given loan by housing finance companies if she is unemployed.
  • Loans are granted to the owner of the house and a co-applicant is not entitled to concessions of any sort.
If you are looking to invest in a property, make sure you take all these conditions into consideration.

Online Sale Of Medicines Banned Across India – A Big Blow To Ecommerce In India? As per Delhi HC, sale of online medicines is harmful for all Indians.
In a big blow to e-commerce in India, Delhi High Court has banned the sale of online medicines across India.

Why this extreme decision was taken? What will happen now to the sale of online medicines?

Delhi High Court: Immediate Ban On Online Sales Of Medicines

A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao gave their order on the ban of selling any type of medicines online.

The Bench has directed Centre and AAP Govt in Delhi to immediately implement the order, and stop ecommerce portals from selling online medicines.

This order will directly impact leading online portals for selling medicines such as Practo, 1MG, Netmeds, WeChemist and others.

The PIL Which Led To Online Medicine Ban

The bench of Delhi High Court announced this verdict after a PIL was filed by Delhi-based dermatologist Zaheer Ahmed, which was represented by advocate Nakul Mohta.

As per the PIL, these were the arguments which Delhi HC accepted, and placed a ban on online medicines:
  • Online sale of medicines is not allowed under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 and Pharmacy Act, 1948
  • Online sale of medicines is unregulated, and harmful for all Indians
  • Drug Controller General of India in 2015 had ordered all State Drug Controllers to regulate online sales. But Govt. was not able to control it, and this can cause widespread harm to society.
  • Govt. has failed to implement Article 21, which states that it is Govt.’s responsibility to protect the health of all citizens
  • Uneducated users of the Internet from rural areas are ordering harmful medicines, which can be abused by addicts.
  • The PIL Stated: “Some drugs have psychotropic substances and can be easily ordered on the internet and misused for criminal activities or drug abuse.”

Online Sale Of Medicines In India: Controversies, Protests and More

The issue of online sales of medicines had been controversial since some time, but no one expected this extreme order by Delhi HC.

Entire pharma industry of India had declared an all-out war against e-commerce in 2015, as the protests picked up steam after that. In 2016, Drug Controller General of India had stopped all e-commerce portals from selling medicines online, but this didn’t make any change in the online business. In 2015, Snapdeal’s warehouses were raided by Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for selling drugs/medicines without a prescription.

Govt. had attempted to regulate the sale of online medicines by ordering that online portal will be allowed to sell online registered drugs, that too with a prescription.

In September, offline medicine sellers and chemists had announced a nation-wide strike wherein more than 8.5 lakh shop owners had shut down their business to protest against online sales.

Now, all eyes set on IAMAI, and online medicine portals, to take the next step. We will keep you updated.

Motorola Moto Z2 Play Review [With Video]: With Moto Mods, It’s the Real Flagship Killer

Moto Z phones along with Moto Mods were a welcome break from the regular spec sheet race last year. While the ‘modular’ Moto Z series phones are competitively priced, Moto Mods are expensive. To this, Managing Director of Motorola Mobility India Sudhin Mathur said, “Innovation comes at a price. You decide whether you want more RAM or something really new and innovative.”

While the older Moto Z Play smartphone is still selling for Rs 24,999, the second generation, Moto Z2 Play, offers a better design and upgraded hardware for the price of Rs 27,999. Both the Moto Z Play phones essentially focus on the overall "modular" experience in a budget rather than just a mere spec-sheet comparisons. So, what can a first-time Moto Mod user expect and should Moto Z Play users upgrade to the latest edition? Let’s find out in this review.

google docs to wordpressWe love WordPress, but it can also be frustrating sometimes when it doesn’t work flawlessly with another platform or integration. A lot of you are business owners and bloggers which have to deal with content creation for your sites on a regular basis. More often than not this is done via Google Docs because it is super easy for people to share drafts and collaborate in real-time for free. However, when it comes to moving from Google Docs to WordPress, this is where things get messy, as much of your formatting is lost or breaks. And it soon becomes a WordPress publisher’s nightmare. Check out these four tricks to help make working with Google Docs and WordPress a little easier.

The Issue With Google Docs and WordPress

It is no question that Google Docs is probably one of the most popular platforms when it comes to online document sharing and editing. Microsoft Office 365 is really its only competitor. In fact, if we take a look at Google Trends for “Google Docs,” you can see that over the past 5 years interest around it has been steadily increasing. Google Docs is completely free to use and that is why it has become a popular tool for content creators, bloggers, and writers.

google docs trendsGoogle Docs trends
So let’s dive into the real issue. Let’s say you hire a writer to put together an article for your blog. They put together the draft in a Google Doc and send you a link so you can take a look and approve it. Perhaps you make a few edits and then are ready to move it into your WordPress site. Typically you would simply copy and paste the contents from your Google Doc into the WordPress visual editor. But what happens, in reality, is that this results in all sorts of formatting issues.
Below is an example Google Doc we are going to use. So we select all the content and copy it to our clipboard.

Google Doc example
We then go over to our WordPress editor and paste it. The first issue you have is that typically there will be extra line breaks in-between paragraphs, even though in the Google Doc there is literally only one line break.

google doc exampleGoogle Docs to WordPress spacing issue
Google Docs to WordPress spacing issue
It gets worse though, if we take a look at the text and or code view of it, here is what it looks like. You can see that all of this extra unecessary code is being added.

google docs to wordpress span style font weight 400
Google Docs to WordPress span style issue
Extra lines breaks are being added inserting this code.
When you copy from Google Docs to WordPress it creates extra span styles everywhere.
<span style="font-weight: 400;"> </span>
When you copy from Google Docs to WordPress and have lists it creates extra font-weights styles.
<li style="font-weight: 400;">
So basically you are left with a mess in your code. And even if you ignore the code, which you shouldn’t, you would still have the line breaks everywhere. On a 2,000+ document this is a lot of backspacing to be done to fix it. And your are still left with underlying code which really should be fixed. This is a huge waste of time. It can also affect your performance. Yes, it is at a very minimal level, but even HTML makes up your overall total page weight. So what can you do about it? Well, follow the tricks below.
Note: It is important to know that Office 365 Word doesn’t have the same issue with span styles and font weight. However, it still has the spacing issues when copying across to the WordPress editor. Also, you might be wondering about images. Images don’t copy across either, but you should generally upload those separately anyways. Images should be compressed, as well as strategically naming the file for SEO purposes. That’s right, even image files names matter when it comes to SEO.

Google Docs to WordPress

It’s kind of surprising that these issues are still happening 2017, and we are curious why they aren’t being discussed more in the WordPress community. We personally know a lot of you writers out there are using Google Docs. We use it as well. Thankfully, there are a few tricks you can use to make your workflow from Google Docs to WordPress less painful and streamlined.

1. Trick to Clear Formatting

The first little trick is a little weird, but it works, and involves a simple copy and paste a couple times along with utilizing the clear formatting button. Follow the steps below to get quickly clean up the formatting.
Retain Google Docs to #WordPress formatting with this simple trick! 😂 Click to Tweet

Step 1

Copy and paste the contents from Google Docs into your WordPress Visual Editor as normal. Select your text and copy it again to your clipboard.

Copy contents in WordPress editor

Step 2

It sounds weird, but create a new temporary blank post draft by clicking into “Add New” under posts in your dashboard. Then paste the content again from your first post that you just copied. When you paste this the second time it will automatically clean up the extra line breaks.

Step 3

Then copy and paste the contents from your temporary draft back into your original post. Highlight all of the content and click on the “Clear formatting” button in the visual toolbar editor. This will remove the span styles, and font weights. This trick retains all of the headers (h1, H2, H3, etc.). The only thing it doesn’t retain is the bold. If you need to retain every 100%, then check out trick 2 and 3.

And here is an example of the text and or code view after the steps above. As you can see, it is as clean as a whistle.

Now you can continue to work with writers and bloggers using Google Docs and it won’t slow down your workflow. All it takes is a simple copy and paste a couple times and using the clear formatting button.
For some of you, this may not matter that much. But for those of you who use both Google Docs and WordPress a lot, this might just be a lifesaver! We use this trick ourselves every day. When we originally went to find a solution we even were going as far as converting to Markdown and then moving back into WordPress. Little did we know, all it took was a simple copy and paste, plus clearing the formatting, which gets you to almost near perfect.

2. Use Wordable to Easily Move Google Docs to WordPress

The second option you have is to use a premium service called Wordable. This was actually created for the very problem we described above, and that is, there has not been a good solution to move Google Docs to WordPress. Basically with Wordable you can draft and collaborate in Google Docs as normal. When you are ready, there is a one-click button import to your WordPress site. It retains all your tags, headers, bold, bullets, italics, and even your images.
They have a free plan which allows you to give it a try. It comes with unlimited free exports for 24 hours and 2 free exports after that. You can hook it up to one WordPress site. If you need more exports and the ability to export to multiple WordPress sites the premium version is $19/month. While this does sound costly, if you use Google Docs on a daily basis, this service definitely pays for itself.
The two possible cons for some is that you have to give them access to your Google Drive as well as your WordPress site (with the plugin). This might be an issue for those concerned with security. We would personally love to see a 3rd party, standalone exporter. Follow the steps below on how to easily export from Google Docs to WordPress.

Step 1

Sign up over at Wordable for a free account. It will ask for permission to your Google Drive.

Step 2

Add your WordPress site under Settings and download and install the plugin.

Step 3

Search for the document in your Google Drive list and click on “Export to WordPress.” This will create a draft of the article on your WordPress site.

Step 4

Click on the “Published as Draft” link or visit your WordPress dashboard to examine the post.

And here is how it looks in the WordPress editor. All the formatting came across perfectly, no extra code. And even the image came across.

Also, as far as the images goes, when you upload an image to Google Docs, it actually does retain its filename. So if you instruct writers beforehand to name their images for SEO purposes, it will then follow through if you are exporting using Wordable.  Otherwise, if they don’t. We would recommend re-uploading all of your images, which could be a pain.

Images exported from Wordable also go directly to your WordPress media library which means they can be compressed with a third party image optimization plugin. As you can see, Wordable can be a very fast and effective option if you need something to export from Google Docs to WordPress and retain all the formatting.

3. Jetpack and Chrome Extension

Another solution is to use Jetpack, along with their free Chrome extension. One thing to be aware of though is that JetPack does add additional requests to your site, and it requires things such as XML-RPC and the JSON API to be enabled for it to function.

Step 1

You can download Jetpack from the WordPress repository, or by searching for it within your WordPress dashboard under “Add New” plugins.

Step 2

Upon activation you will need to connect Jetpack to

Step 3

Then install the free to Google Docs Chrome extension. You will have to give it permission to access your documents.

Step 4

Then in Google Docs click on “Add-ons” and select “ for Google Docs.” Then on the right hand side you can click on “Save” and it will create a post in your WordPress site.

4. Give Writers a WordPress Account

The last option you have is to simply create WordPress accounts for your writers and require that they create everything entirely within the WordPress editor. For some, this might be a better solution, but there are also a lot of companies that don’t want to have to worry about managing author accounts.
WordPress essentially contains six different user roles. For authors and writers you will probably want to choose one of the following, based upon what you want them to have access to:
  • Author: somebody who can publish and manage their own posts.
  • Contributor: somebody who can write and manage their own posts but cannot publish them.
To create an account for a writer simply click on “Add New” under Users in your WordPress dashboard and assign the role you want them to have.

You could even take this a step further with a permissions plugin like the User Role Editor. But even with correct roles and permissions setup, letting more people access to your WordPress dashboard still weakens your overall security. Just make sure you are careful when adding accounts for people you don’t know.

Attention Taxpayers: Note These 5 Income Tax Changes Effective April 1st, 2018!
March 31st, 2018 is the last date for filing Income Tax returns for Financial years 2015-16 and 2016-17, and taxpayers are a busy lot right now. Starting April 1st, some major changes are being implemented in the tax structure, which should be known to all taxpayers. By understanding these changes, the taxpayer can prepare better, and plan investments accordingly. Here are these changes:
Long-term Capital Gains Tax Returns: Long-term capital gains tax or LTCG on equity investments is making a comeback this year. Capital gains in excess of Rs 1 lakh made on the sale of equity shares will be taxed at 10%, starting April 1st. Capital gains on equity sales till January 31st are being grandfathered. Gains on equity-linked shares will be also taxed. Equities held for more than 1 year would be only taxed and exempted from indexation.
Cess Becomes Higher Health and Education Cess would be now charged at 4%, compared to 3% earlier. This change was announced by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley during Union Budget.
Standard Deductions Come Into Picture As announced in the Union Budget, Standard deductions have come into the picture, effective April 1st, 2018. Right now, standard deductions of Rs 19,200/- for transport allowance and Rs 15,000/- for medical reimbursement is in place, which has been increased to Rs 40,000/-. Hence, salaried employees can now get a standard deduction of flat Rs 40,000/-, every financial year. Around 2.5 crore employees are set to benefit from this change, effective April 1st, 2018.
Tax On Mutual Fund Dividends Is Introduced An additional tax of 10% has been introduced for dividends gained from mutual funds, effective April 1st, 2018. This tax of 10% is only applicable on those mutual funds, which are linked with equity shares. Last year, mutual funds from India pumped in Rs 1 lakh crore into the stock market, which is increasing at an amazing pace since 2016. However, long-term capital gain tax and tax on mutual funds, both can impact these numbers now.
Tax-Free Pension And, finally, a good news. Effective April 1st, non-employee subscribers can withdraw pension funds without paying any income tax. This exemption has been made for NPS (National Pension System) related withdrawals. We will keep you updated, as we receive more updates.

Govt. To Announce 2% Rebate On GST On Digital Cashless Payments!Govt. of India wants to promote cashless drive in every sphere of commerce; and GST is their new ammunition.
In a masterstroke, Govt. is making plans to incentivize digital payments, by providing instant discount of 2% on the GST.
But, why this is a masterstroke? Because, only those transactions which are less than Rs 2000 would be the eligible for this rebate.

Will it work?

Govt.: Pay Less GST If You Choose Cashless Payments
As per ET’s report, Govt. is considering a proposal to offer 2% discount on GST paid, if the payment has been made via digital or cashless mode.
As you are reading this post, officials from finance ministry, RBI, cabinet secretariat and ministry of electronics and IT are having detailed discussion on this issue, and a decision would be taken soon.
Rs 2000 is an interesting threshold, because data states that maximum digital transactions happening in India are sub-Rs 2000.

This is the reason Govt. removed OTP for sub-Rs 2000 transactions last year, which gave a tremendous boost to the overall habit creation of cashless payments.

And now, the same is being planned using discounted GST as the incentive.

An unnamed source said, “The idea is to incentivise all kinds of digital payments, especially smaller transactions, in line with the government’s plan of making India a less-cash economy,”

It is still not clear how and when the discount on GST shall be provided. It can be given at the time of making payment, or credited later as a special cashback while filing tax returns.

This decision has to be taken by Finance Ministry, regarding which an announcement would be soon made.

Govt. of India’s Efforts For Boosting Cashless Payments
In the past few months, even before demonetization kicked in, Govt. of India had been promoting and encouraging cashless drive via various offers and schemes.

Recently, for encouraging BHIM app, and UPI mode of payments, Govt. announced Rs 340 crore worth of lucky draws and lottery for common citizens; besides special Independence Day offer for BHIM app users.

Even before GST, Govt. had launched several incentives for paying tax, via digital mode.

Last year, we had reported how small traders can save upto 46% in taxes, if they accept payments via cashless mode.

In February last year, Govt. removed surcharge, and service charge for all digital payments; and in December, service tax was removed on digital payments.

Immediately after demonetization, a slew of offers and discounts were announced for promoting cashless payments all across India.

Do you think such incentives and offers for cashless payments actually work? Or they are mere marketing gimmicks of the Central Govt.?

The Best Tax Software of 2017Personal tax preparation applications have been around for about a quarter of a century, first as desktop software and then as online solutions. They developed rapidly in their early years, adding forms, schedules, and state support until everyone was covered, and every deduction found. They also became unwieldy as they grew in complexity. In later years, the tax prep applications benefited from user interface tweaks that made them easier to use, and streamlined all-important taxpayer help systems.
Thankfully, you usually don't have to view any official IRS forms as you work your way through your return online. Once you organize your tax documents, that should be just about the last time you need to look at an official document. The developers of these tax preparation services have taken apart Form 1040—and all of its supporting forms and schedules—and turned them into lengthy interview sessions. You provide responses, and they work in the background, taking those answers and dropping them onto the correct document lines.
Today, all major IRS forms and schedules are supported, and preparing your taxes using the best of these services is no more difficult than working your way through any giant software wizard—except for the part where you have a strict legal obligation to be sure that all of your answers are accurate, of course. Every screen contains a statement or question in understandable English (usually). You supply answers by clicking buttons or entering your response in blank fields or selecting an option from drop-down lists.

Help Along the Way
Even if a query is clearly worded, you may still be unsure whether you're supposed to supply information, and what that information might be. Tax websites help you understand those confusing elements in a variety of ways. They might turn a word or phrase into a hyperlink that opens a small window containing a more detailed explanation. Likewise, they might anticipate your questions and post links to related Q&As, right on the pages that might spur you to ask the question. This kind of context-sensitive help is extremely important. If you need to consult any of the other methods of help detailed below, it means that the service has failed to anticipate your needs, your time has been wasted, and your blood pressure has probably gone up, too. Sites that lack good context-sensitive help are heavily penalized in our reviews.

Still, no service can anticipate every contingency or question. Most tax preparation applications offer as a second tier of help giant databases of tax information that you can search if you're really stuck. Some offer glossaries, too. You may be directed occasionally to read IRS instructions or peruse an IRS publication, but that should be vanishingly rare in a good service. After all, IRS documents are free, and, unless you're using Credit Karma Tax, you're largely paying for the convenience of not reading IRS documents. The IRS is, of course, the last word on taxes, but creating lucid, reassuring guides is not one of its notable strengths.

If all that isn't enough, you might want to interact with a real human being. These sites offer connections to tax professionals that might occur via chat, email, or phone. Jackson Hewitt and TaxSlayer are the only two services we've reviewed to offer all three methods, this year. TurboTax provides the most innovative and potentially the fastest way to get human help. Its SmartLook creates a connection between you and a tax expert. You see them talking to you live on your screen. At the same time, they can see where you're having trouble by viewing your screen and troubleshooting your problem. If you're wondering how TurboTax can be so expensive and yet win an Editors' Choice award, features like this that are part of the answer. One note: if you think you're likely to need to rely on this kind of direct contact with your tax service, you're much better off doing your taxes early. Otherwise they might be overwhelmed by last-minute e-filers.

When you've gone through all the screens that pertain to your financial situation, these sites review your work and point out possible errors and omissions. They also transfer applicable data to your state return if you have to file one. When all questions are answered and your return is cleaned up, they ask for payment before they help you print your actual IRS forms and schedules or e-file them.

File Your Schedule C
Last year, we reviewed the deluxe versions of the major tax preparation websites because they tend to be the most popular. This year, however we looked at top-of-the-line sites that support the Schedule C, given the growing freelance and independent contractor market.

All but one of sites we evaluated come in multiple versions with different price points—Credit Karma Tax being the one (free) exception. Every application in a given family looks and works like the others, but the more expensive they are, the more IRS forms and schedules they support. High-level editions also come with special features that are usually enhanced support options. You'll need to check to make sure any particular features you're interested in are included in a less expensive version, if you don't need the top-tier software, but the ratings should reasonably well to the entire families of products, as they tend to share help systems, interfaces, support, and so on.

This Year's Tax-Prep Lineup
Most of the names of this year's offerings will be familiar if you've used tax applications before, but there's a new one this year. Credit Karma Tax is from parent company Credit Karma, a service that monitors your credit reports and gives you weekly updates. It's the only tax site that supports federal and state filing of complex returns at no cost, but it's new enough that it still needs to grow a lot to compete with the other sites reviewed here.

TaxAct stopped offering free filing years ago, but it's still the most affordable option among the paid sites: $30 for federal and $25 for state if you buy TaxAct Online Premium. Prices have been creeping up on this Iowa company's offerings in recent years, but the site offers something that no one else does: a price lock guarantee. Everyone else charges one price until usually sometime in March, when they raise it by $20 or more.

TaxAct Online Premium is not just affordable. It's an exceptional personal tax preparation website, and we recommend it for taxpayers on a budget that just can't swing TurboTax Self-Employed's high price. Both win Editors' Choice awards this year. TurboTax costs $114.99 for federal returns and $39.99 for state.

TaxSlayer Premium is not far behind TaxAct in price: It's $35 for federal returns and $22 for state. And it's improved since last year, edging up a half-point in our star rankings.

H&R Block Premium ($54.99 federal, $36.99 state) and Jackson Hewitt Premium $79.95 federal, $36.95 state) are our two midrange offerings, price-wise. H&R Block Premium is an all-around excellent offering, but Jackson Hewitt Premium suffers from spotty and a mediocre user experience. It looks quite overpriced in roundup that includes TaxAct and Credit Karma Tax.

Who Should File Taxes Online?
Keep in mind that the only people who need to purchase the most expense personal tax preparation solutions are those who have self-employment income and expenses (either full- or part-time) that must be reported on a Schedule C. If not, you can go one step down, save money, and still have access to the forms and schedules you need to report income, deductions, and credits.

In fact, for e-filers with very simple returns (the 1040EZ in particular) most of these service offer free mobile apps that can get the job done in a snap...of your smartphone's camera, which is often the way you get the data into the app. We're busy reviewing those apps right now and will update this roundup once we've finished.

If you've never reported self-employment income but want to try tax prep on your own, I'd recommend that you create an account at the site of your choice (my favorites are obviously TurboTax Self-Employed and TaxAct Online Premium) and run through it far enough to see what Schedule C reporting is like, especially if you're going to try to claim business use of your home and/or vehicle expenses. You can do this without paying anything. Are you confident about your ability to complete those sections accurately?

Do-it-yourself personal tax preparation isn't for everyone. And there's no magic formula that dictates which taxpayers are likely to succeed on their own. Beyond gauging your confidence in your ability to complete this complex task, consider the time you'll spend doing it. Price professional tax preparers. And then balance your ability and the value of your time with that cost.

That said, keep in mind that millions of people, from 1040EZ filers to full-blown, full-time freelancers, use these sites every year to prepare their taxes.

What About Business Taxes?
All the sites reviewed here support sole proprietorships and single-member LLCs because they include Schedule C preparation and filing. But what if your small business was organized as a multimember LLC, S Corporation, C Corporation or partnership? You'll need tax preparation software or a website that supports different forms, primarily the 1065, 1120, and the 1120S. You will also probably need payroll forms (940 and 941) and employer forms (W-2 and 1099) for each of your employees. Depending on your business structure, you may need to file additional IRS documents.

There are software and online solutions available for these business types. They cost a bit more than the sites reviewed here, but they offer similar usability features, data entry methods, and help tools. That said, the taxes in question may be much more complicated, depending on your business. You may be able to import reports and other income and expense data from existing files. And you can transfer related information to the appropriate state returns (for an additional fee) and file your return electronically. The process of preparing business returns is understandably more complex than completing a 1040, but there are options if you want to tackle it yourself. Of course, you may also opt to go with an accountant, too.

Can You File Your Taxes from Your Phone?
Yes, you can. Both Intuit and H&R Block have produced mobile versions of their top-of-the-line personal tax preparation solutions for a couple of years now. You can complete the same complex return on both your desktop browser and your smartphone or tablet. In fact, you can start your return on one platform and pick up where you left off on another.

But it your return is simple enough, you can do so at no charge. For tax year 2016, I have reviewed free mobile tax preparation apps from the four leading tax software producers. TaxAct Express and TaxSlayer Simply Free offer free preparation and filing of both federal and state returns if you only need to use the 1040EZ. TurboTax Absolute Zero also supports the 1040A. And H&R Block More Zero lets you itemize deductions found on the Schedule A in addition.

You could use these free versions on your desktop browser, or switch back and forth between browser and smartphone by entering your user name and password. Or you can complete your entire return start to finish on your phone. The app's creators have done a good job of creating step-by-step interviews. They ask questions and provide ways for you to supply responses, similar to the way the browser-based versions work, only optimized for iPhone and Android. When you're finished, they review your return looking for problems, then go on to help you file.

H&R Block More Zero wins our Editors' Choice for free mobile tax preparation software this year, and not only because it covers the most tax territory. It's a little more businesslike and straightforward than TurboTax Absolute Zero, which is breezier and offers what I think is the best, most interactive user experience. H&R Block, though, wins for both substance and support. Its help content is both in-depth and voluminous. You probably don't need a lot of guidance to get through the 1040EZ/A, but you may have questions when grappling with some Schedule A topics. H&R Block More Zero has answers.

7th Pay Commission: Decision on higher HRA allowance likely as Cabinet meets today
After an year of wait nearly 50 lakh central government employees who are waiting for higher allowance under 7th Pay Commission are likely to hear some good news.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has returned from his foreign visit last night and today he will be meeting his Cabinet members today to take final decision on revised salary as per 7th Pay Commission, media reports suggests.
According to a report by IndiaToday, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will place the recommendation report before the Cabinet today. Apart from higher allowance, the issues like House Rent Allowance (HRA), Dearness Allowance (DA) and arrears will also be discussed.
The 7th Pay Commission had recommended HRA too be fixed at 24%, 16% and 8% depending on the cities employees work in. But, central government employees demanded 30%, 24% and 16% HRA.
Looking at the high protest by the employees, FM Jaitley last year formed a committee under the leadership of Finance Secretary Ashok Lavasa to look into matter. After several months, Lavasa panel submitted its recommendation report in April suggesting HRA to be fixed at between 25% and 27%.
Under the 7th Pay Commission, nearly 200 allowances have been subsumed into a smaller batch.
According to sources, the allowance hike under the 7th pay commision will be likely to announced after this evening's cabinet meet.
Meanwhile, expenditure secretary Ashok Lawasa concluded the meeting with allowance committee officials, but details of the meeting are yet to be revealed.

In a bonanza to 48 lakh central government employees, the Union Cabinet today approved recommendations of 7th Central Pay Commission with 34 modifications which will impose an additional annual burden of Rs 30,748 crore on the exchequer.

The increased allowances, which comes into effect from July 1, 2017, is based on the recommendations of the Committee on Allowances (CoA).

The allowances as recommended by the 7th Central Pay Commission would have cost the exchequer Rs 29,300 crore. The modified allowances approved by the Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will increase the burden by Rs 1,448 crore to Rs 30,748 crore per annum.

Briefing the media after the Cabinet meeting, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the modifications are based on suggestions made by the CoA in its report submitted to the Finance Minister on April 27, and the Empowered Committee of Secretaries set up to screen the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission.

The 7th Pay Commission suggested abolition of 53 allowances. Of these, the government decided not to do away with 12 allowance, he said.

This will benefit over one lakh employees belonging to specific categories in railways, posts, defence and scientific departments.

The modifications approved today were finalised by the Empowered Committee of Secretaries based on the recommendations of the CoA, he said.

"The CoA had undertaken extensive stakeholder consultations before finalising its recommendations. It had interacted with Joint Consultative Machinery (staff side) and representatives from various staff associations.

"Most of the modifications are on account of continuing requirement of some of the existing arrangements, administrative exigencies and to further the rationalisation of the allowances structure," he said.

Sharing details, Jaitley said the Pay Commission had recommended reduction in the HRA rates to 24 per cent for X, 16 per cent for Y and 8 per cent for Z category of cities.

"As the HRA at the reduced rates may not be sufficient for employees falling in lower pay bracket, it has been decided that HRA will not be less than Rs 5400, Rs 3600 and Rs 1800 for X, Y and Z category of cities respectively.

"This floor rate has been calculated at 30 per cent, 20 per cent and 10 per cent of the minimum pay of Rs 18,000. This will benefit more than 7.5 lakh 1 to 3 levels of employees," he said.

House Rent Allowance (HRA) is currently paid at 30 per cent for X (population of 50 lakh and above), 20 per cent for Y (5-50 lakh) and 10 per cent for Z (below 5 lakh) category of cities.

With regard to defence forces, he said ration allowances will be directly credited to their accounts.

Talking about Siachen allowance, he said level 9 and above will get Rs 42,500 as compared to Rs 31,500 recommended by Pay Commission. For level 8 and below it would be Rs 30,000 against Rs 21,000 recommended by the Pay Commission.

"Additional allowances has been restructured, the government has doubled medical allowance for pensioners to Rs 1,000. However, the Pay Commission had recommended Rs 500 as medical allowance for pensioners," he said.

Talking about dress allowance, he said various types of allowances are paid at present for provisioning and maintenance of uniforms/outfits such as Washing Allowance, Uniform Allowance, Kit Maintenance Allowance and Outfit Allowance.

These have been rationalised and subsumed in newly proposed Dress Allowance to be paid annually in four slabs -- Rs 5,000, Rs 10,000, Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000 for various category of employees, he said.
