Airtel Rs 349 And Rs 549 Recharge Offers Now Give 2GB And 3GB Daily Data
Airtel’s Rs 349, Rs 549 recharge offers now give 2GB, 3GB daily data: Comparison with Reliance Jio : Airtel has revised its Rs 349 plan for prepaid users, to offer 2GB data per day. Meanwhile, Airtel’s Rs 549 prepaid plan gives users 3GB data per day. Both the recharge packs come with unlimited local plus STD call benefits along with unlimited roaming incoming, outgoing calls as well as unlimited local and national SMS. Validity for both the plans is 28 days. To give a perspective, Airtel’s Rs 349 plan offers a total of 56GB data at 2GB per day for 28 days. In comparison, users will get a total of 84GB data, if they recharge with s 549 pack. Airtel’s Rs 349 recharge pack is one of the bestselling plans for the company, and it originally put FUP (Fair Usage Policy) of 1GB per day. The plan was earlier revamped to offer 1.5GB data per day. Now the plan gives users 2GB data per day. Company’s Rs 549 prepaid recharge voucher, on the other hand, offered users 2.5GB data per day previously.
If we look at Reliance Jio prepaid tariff, a few of these plans offer more data for a longer validity period for much lower price. However, the FUP for most of these plans is set to 1GB per day. For example, recharging with Rs 309 will give users a total of 49GB data at 1GB per day. Of course, validity is 49 days. Reliance Jio has Rs 399, Rs 459, and Rs 499 plans as well. These give users 70GB, 84GB, and 91GB data respectively for 70 days, 84 days and 91 days respectively. FUP for each of these recharge vouchers is 1GB. Notably, local, STD, roaming voice calls as well as SMS and access to Jio’s suite of app is free on company’s network.
To get 2GB and 3GB daily data on Jio’s network, users will have to recharge with Rs 509 and Rs 799 respectively. Reliance Jio’s Rs 509 plan offers a total of 98GB data at 2GB per day for 49 days. The Rs 799 recharge voucher offers a total of 84GB data for 28 days. FUP is 3GB per day. Clearly, Airtel’s Rs 549 pack is a better deal for heavy data users as it gives the same amount of data for the same validity as Jio’s Rs 799 plan, but at a much lower price of Rs 549. Interestingly, Airtel too has a Rs 799 recharge offer that gives 3.5GB data per day for 28 days.

Final Deadline! Every Mobile No. Should Be Linked With Aadhaar By 26 Feb 2018!
The decks are cleared, and the path is determined. Govt. is refusing to retreat on their firm resolve to make Aadhaar the de-facto identity of every Indian.

In a latest affidavit filed by the Centre, it has been said that every mobile needs to be linked with Aadhaar by February 26th, and every bank with Aadhaar by March 31st.

And, when it comes to hacking of Aadhaar data, then Govt. has plainly stated that no such incident has ever happened.

So, the Aadhaar push is real, and mandatory. There is no way out now.

Mobile No.-Aadhaar Linkage By February 26th: Govt.
In the ongoing case in Supreme Court regarding Aadhaar and its mandatory linkage with services, Govt. of India has filed an affidavit, which states that they cannot go back now.

February 26th is the deadline for every mobile phone user to link their Aadhaar.

The 113- page affidavit was filed by advocate Zoheb Hossain, on behalf of Govt. of India.

On October 31st, in the same case, Supreme Court had questioned Centre’s relentless push towards Aadhaar linkage, and had asked them why it was needed in the first place.

In an indirect reference to this question, Govt. has informed Supreme Court that they are acting on the instruction of the Apex Court itself, and going back on this may not be possible now. Centre is referring to the Lokniti Foundation case, during which arguments were put forth regarding illegal usage of mobile phones, and how Aadhaar can check these activities.

The hearing took place in February this year, and Centre has sought 1-year deadline for implementing the mandatory Aadhaar-Mobile linking, which Supreme Court had approved.

Hence, as per the Centre, going back on this action would be going against the Supreme Court itself.

Bank-Aadhaar Linkage By March 31
Meanwhile, in the affidavit, Govt. has informed Supreme Court that the deadline for linking bank accounts with Aadhaar has been extended till March 31st. Earlier, the deadline was December 31st.

Centre said,
“Until March 31, existing bank accounts will not be made non-operational for not linking with Aadhaar. But as far as opening new bank accounts are concerned, Aadhaar or enrolment ID must be given as proof of identity. For existing account holders, the deadline for Aadhaar based verification is being extended to March 31 and no coercive action will be taken till then.”
Reacting to reports that some Indian citizens have died of starvation, as they didn’t get the approved ration in the absence of Aadhaar, Govt. said no starvation death has been reported as of now.

Besides, Govt. has also denied any incident of Aadhaar data breach or compromising security of the UIDAI server, ever.

Govt. said,
“There has not been a single instance of hacking or data breach in or from UIDAI or any of its servers.”
Besides, the affidavit says that hacking incidents do happen, with or without Aadhaar.

We have already reported that 75% of active SIM cards in India can be deactivated, if Aadhaar is not linked.

Every telco in India is right now ‘ordering’ and ‘requesting’ their users to connect their Aadhaar with their mobile, as soon as possible.

Idea Offers Unlimited Calls, 1GB Data Per Day For Rs 399/-
Two interesting developments have happened in the telecom industry involving Idea, Vodafone and Micromax, which proves that Jio is the trendsetter for all telecom companies.

While Idea has launched a new postpaid plan for Rs 399, Vodafone and Micromax has launched a smartphone costing Rs 999/-, which is the ‘effective’ price.

Idea: Rs 399/- Plan For Postpaid Users
Idea has now decided to launch 1GB data per day plan for their postpaid users, which will cost them only Rs 399/- per month.

Note here, that this plan is applicable for only those who are joining Idea network right now.

While this plan offers 1 GB data per day, the unlimited STD calls option is only available under home circle. Local calls would be anyways free.

This postpaid plan is a direct copy of Airtel, which had launched a similar Rs 399 monthly plan, which offered 10 GB data in a month.

Idea’s postpaid plan for Rs 399/- is also providing 100 SMSes.

Customers can only avail this plan via Idea website, wherein a form needs to be filled, and the SIM would be delivered at home.

Vodafone-Micromax Launches Rs 999/- Smartphone
Meanwhile Vodafone and Micromax has collaborated to launch a bundled smartphone, costing only Rs 999/-. Named as Bharat 2 Ultra smartphone, this will come bundled with Vodafone SuperNet 4G connection.

Avneesh Khosla, Associate Director, Consumer Business, Vodafone India said,

“We are delighted to partner with Micromax to democratise the 4G smartphones at a never before price of under Rs 999/-.”
In order to buy the handset, Vodafone customers need to pay Rs 2899/-, and then will have to do recharge Rs 150/- per month for 36 months.

At the end of 18 months, users will receive cashback worth Rs 900/- and then cashback of Rs 1000 after another 18 months.

This cashback would be directly credited to Vodafone M-Pesa wallet.

Hence, the effective price of this smartphone would be Rs 999/-.

Some features of this phone:

Spreadtrum SC9832 1.3Ghz Quad Core processor

  • 512MB RAM
  • 4GB ROM
  • 4” WVGA display
  • 2 MP rear camera
  • 0.3 MP front camera
  • 1300 mAh battery.
  • Android Marshmallow OS

We have taken an in-depth look at this collaboration between Vodafone and Micromax.

Micromax Bharat 2 Ultra: Vodafone’s Bundled Smartphone For Rs. 999!
After BSNL, Micromax has now partnered with Vodafone to launch Micromax Bharat 2 Ultra 4G Smartphone at an effective price of Rs. 999/-. At present, Bharat 2 Ultra is possibly the lowest priced 4G smartphone in the market, among all the offerings.
Micromax had a major share in the smartphone market a few years back, which it lost to its Chinese counterparts. The domestic handset maker is desperate to take back its place among the top five smartphone makers by the end of the year, and is leaving no stone unturned.
Micromax Bharat 2 Ultra: Vodafone’s Bundled 4G Smartphone
The Bharat 2 Ultra from Micromax will be a Vodafone exclusive, bundled with calling and data plans from the telecom operator. The effective price of the device will be Rs. 999/- as customers who buy this smartphone will get cashback over a period of three years, bringing down the price from Rs. 2,899/- to Rs. 999/-.

How Will It Work?
All the existing, and new, Vodafone customers will have to buy the Bharat 2 Ultra at at Rs.2,899/-. After that, they have to do a recharge of at least Rs. 150/- per month for the next three years. At the end of 18 months, users will get a cashback of Rs. 900/- and after the next 18 months, they will get a cashback of Rs. 1,000/-. The cashback will be added to their Vodafone M-Pesa wallets. The cashback can then be used in digital transactions or can be withdrawn as cash from the nearest Vodafone M-Pesa retailer.

Micromax And Vodafone Partnership – The Advantage
This partnership will give both companies an advantage. The domestic handset maker will add more volume to their sales, while the carrier will add more customers. Micromax wants to take the fight to its Chinese rivals. Vodafone wants to one-up Jio and Airtel. While Jio has it’s own 4G feature phone, Airtel has recently partnered with Karbonn Mobiles to launch their own bundled 4G smartphone. With Micromax and Vodafone partnering, this will provide both the companies a major boost in their quest for market supremacy.

Micromax Banking On BSNL And Vodafone
Micromax has recently tied up with BSNL to launch their bundled Bharat 1 4G Feature Phone. The tie-up with state run telco, BSNL, will help them to penetrate deeper into the 530 million feature phone user market. Micromax has both, a 4G Feature Phone with BSNL (Bharat 1) and a 4G Smartphone With Vodafone (Bharat 2 Ultra). It is hoping to benefit from both these trends – if a feature phone user moves to smartphone or if a user decides to stick to the feature phone. Micromax already stands at the third position when it comes to feature phones (by volume) after Samsung and Intex.

Micromax Bharat 2 Ultra – Features And Specifications
Let us take a closer look at the specifications of Micromax Bharat 2 Ultra and see what we will be getting at an effective price of Rs. 999/-.

The smartphone will come with a 4 inch WVGA display with a screen resolution of 480 x 800 pixels.

Under the hood, the Bharat 2 Ultra will be powered by a 1.3GHz quad-core Spreadtrum SC9832 processor coupled with 512MB of RAM.

The Bharat 2 Ultra is expected to run Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box.

The smartphone will be equipped with 4GB of on-board storage which can be further expanded up to 32GB with an external memory card.

Coming to optics, the Bharat 2 Ultra has a 2 megapixel primary camera at the back and a 0.3 megapixel selfie shooter. The camera app offers different shooting modes like scene, frame, burst and so on.

SIM Support
Bharat 2 Ultra is a dual SIM (GSM + GSM) smartphone. It will not be locked to Vodafone network and can be used with other SIM cards as well. It accepts a Micro SIM and a Regular SIM.

The smartphone includes most of the connectivity options including Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, headphone jack, FM and 4G with support for Band 40 LTE networks in India.

Media Support
It will support full video viewing for a better media experience, with all social networking and chat apps on board, which will offer a complete smartphone experience.

Micromax Bharat 2 Ultra will house a 1300 mAh non-removable battery which is expected to offer a decent battery life.

With specifications which are at par with its cost, the main attraction here is the cashback offer and the no network lock. The cashback significantly lowers the effective price of the phone. Will you buy this latest bundle from Vodafone? Do let us know in the comments below.

Jio Has Revised Their Tariff; Good News & Bad News For Jio’s Subscribers
So yes, the change was inevitable.

Exactly 48 hours before, we had predicted that Reliance Jio, the disruptor of Indian telecom industry, will very soon increase their tariff and it has actually happened now.
Late last night, Jio has updated their Plans, for both pre-paid and post-paid users, and there is both good news and bad news for consumers.
However, this price increase is a very big news for other telecom operators, because now, they can also jack-up their tariffs, and ensure some profits.

But the timing of this raise in tariff is also very interesting – right on the eve of Diwali.

Does this mean that Jio is under pressure from investors and the cycle of profitability-revenue-loss is forcing them to alter their plans?

Does this mean that Jio will increase their tariff in future as well?

Jio Has Revised Their Pre-Paid Tariff – The Details
The new tariff card is no doubt more expensive, and more costly, especially for their best selling pre-paid plan which was Rs 399/- for 84 GB data, with FUP of 1 GB per day.

This plan no longer exists, as it has been changed to Rs 459/-, which is a direct increase of 15% in tariff.

And this is the bad news for consumers, because very soon, Rs 450-range will become the de-facto and standard of 84-day plans with 1 GB FUP per day.

At the same time, there is good news for users of Rs 149 plan, because now, they can get 4GB 4G data in 28-day period, instead of 2GB data. Hence, this is a 100% increase in data offered, and this is the good news.

Besides, there are other minor changes as well, in the pre-paid section.
From now on, there shall be 9 different plans, with minimum being Rs 52 plan, which will give 1.05 GB data for 7 days validity, a plan which has been long used by Airtel and Vodafone as well, but with 1-day or 2-day validity.

The most expensive pre-paid plan is now Rs 4,999 which will give users 350 GB of data for 360 days.

Here are the all the new and revised pre-paid plans from Jio, effective October 19th:
  • Rs 52/-: 1.05 GB for 7 days (daily limit 0.15 GB)
  • Rs 98/-: 2.1 GB for 14 days (daily limit of 0.15 GB)
  • Rs 149/-: 4.1 GB for 28 days (daily limit of 0.15 GB)
  • Rs 399/-: 70 GB for 70 days (daily limit of 1 GB)
  • Rs 459/-: 84 GB for 84 days (daily limit of 1 GB)
  • Rs 509/-: 98 GB for 49 days (daily limit of 2 GB)
  • Rs 999/-: 90 GB for 60 days (no daily limit)
  • Rs 1,999/-: 125 GB for 180 days (no daily limit)
  • Rs 4,999/-: 350 GB for 360 days (no daily limit)

Jio’s Post Paid Plans Also Changed
At the same time, Jio has also expanded their post-paid plans to accommodate more options for the users.

Earlier, there used to be only two plans: Rs 309 for 60 GB and Rs 509 for 120 GB of data.

However now, there will be 5 different plans:
  • Rs 309/-: 30 GB (daily 1 GB limit)
  • Rs 409/-: 20 GB (no daily limit)
  • Rs 509/-: 60 GB (daily limit of 2 GB)
  • Rs 799/-: 90 GB (daily limit of 3 GB)
  • Rs 999/-: 60 GB (no daily limit)

Earlier, Rs 309 gave 60 GB of data whereas Rs 509 gave 120 GB of data; both for 2-months under their Diwali offer.

Hence, the new data plans have now been categorised based on daily limit or no daily limit. While plans will daily FUP is giving more data, plans with no FUP is giving less data.

Unlimited free voice calls is applicable as before, with no changes. However, free SMS has been capped at 100 per day, as per TRAI’s rules.

Mobile Number Portability Will Get Easier, TRAI’s New ProposalMobile number portability or MNP is one of the most important pillars for creating a transparent and flexible telecom eco-system in India. Consumers should be able to switch to the carrier they prefer, rather than get stuck with their existing ones, without having to change their numbers.
However, there are few existing rules and regulations, which makes the whole process quite tedious, and time-taking. And precisely this the reason that Telecom Authority of India (TRAI) has proposed new guidelines for the same.
TRAI is clear on this issue: they want the whole MNP process to be easy, swift and seamless; and it seems that they are taking the right steps for ensuring that.

TRAI Wants To Reduce Mobile Number Portability Rejections
As per TRAI, around 40% of MNP requests are rejected, due to a technical issue related to Unique Porting Code (UPC). During the MNP process, if the UPC mismatches at the Point of Sales counter, then MNP is rejected.

Under the new proposal, TRAI has proposed that the whole process of UPC matching be made automatic, instead of manual, thereby rectifying 40% of all MNP cases.

This is what happens currently: Suppose a user of Idea wants to port out to Jio. Idea, the donor operator, will generate a 8-digit code called Unique Porting Code (UPC), which is provided to Jio, who is the receiving operator.

As the process of entering UPC is manual, the codes often mismatch, thereby rejecting the MNP process.

Proposed Changes Will Reduce MNP Rejections
Under the new proposal, the donor operator will now send the UPC to a MNP Clearing House. At the time of porting, the receiving operator will have to send a request to the MNP Clearing House for verifying UPC.

Hence, expiry date and UPC code will be now automatically verified, instead of manually entering, thereby eliminating rejections.

Besides UPC code, several other relevant information would be also sent to the MNP Clearinghouse automatically, thereby automating the whole process.
TRAI said, “The draft amendment also propose to make provision to transmit the relevant information viz. date of the bill, amount outstanding, last date of payment, date of the notice and period of notice given to the subscriber by Donor Operator through the MNP Clearing House.”
TRAI also wants to remove the mandatory lock-in period of 90 days for MNP, in case a telco shuts down their services.

Users and general public are requested to send in their feedbacks at with a copy to on/before August 31, 2017, related to the MNP reformation proposal by TRAI.

You can find the Draft Telecommunication Mobile Number Portability (Amendment) Regulations, 2017 here.

The Jio Effect? More Companies To Launch 4G Feature Phones In 2017The Jio Effect?
Jio’s entry into the feature phone segment has forced the other companies to re-think on their own strategies in the feature phone market. As a direct effect of the Jio Phone, major Indian phone manufacturers are planning to bring their own 4G Feature Phone by the year end. The demand saw a huge rise following the announcement of Jio’s entry into the space.

Spreadtrum is supplying it’s chipsets for a major part of Jio 4G Feature Phones. Now, Spreadtrum is suddenly in the spotlight and is in talks with four to five major players in the market to launch their own 4G Feature Phone powered by their chipset. Spreadtrum’s Communications Country Head, Neeraj Sharma told PTI that Spreadtrum is expecting to launch the phones by the end of fourth quarter.

Lava and Intex 4G Feature Phone
India’s own, Lava, has already launched their 4G feature phone with a Spreadtrum chipset. Intex also has announced their new Navratna Series, which will have a 4G feature phone starting at Rs.700/-. They will launch by the end of August, but Intex’s 4G Smart Feature Phone will use a MediaTek chipset.

The 2G Market Transformation
India still lags behind internet consumption (taking the whole population into account) compared to other countries. A major part of the population still uses feature phones which are primarily restricted to 2G speeds. Now, with Jio getting into the smart feature phone market, this will open up the space for a 4G network (as Jio is greenfield LTE only network).

Suddenly, it makes sense for the mobile manufacturers to launch their own 4G feature phones, as the demand will only rise among the feature phone users. As of now, Jio with their cheaper plans for feature phones will make them a preferred choice, and handset manufacturers will want to get into the segment as soon as possible.

Jio 4G Feature Phone and Alternatives
The Jio 4G Feature Phones will carry chipsets from both Qualcomm and Spreadtrum chipsets. The Jio 4G Feature Phone will come with an attractive price tag of Rs. 1,500/- per unit, which will be fully refundable after 36 months. If Jio fails to meet the demand, customers will naturally try to find an alternative at the same price.

This is where phones from other manufacturers step in. Jio is ready to start the beta testing of the feature phones from August 15. The bookings will start on September 24. The other manufacturers will have to hurry if they want to cash in on the rush.

The Actual Cost
Coming to the production cost, it costs around Rs. 1,200 to 2,000 per unit. The future Jio Phones though will come with Wi-Fi, and at the end of the year, it will also have NFC on board. It is hard to say, how other companies will price their feature phones, but it will be close or may be less to price of Jio Feature Phones.

The Jio Phone at Rs. 1,500 will still be expensive. But, Jio’s bundled package, with the Phone and the Plan, makes it a more attractive proposition. It sits at a price point where many might like to give it a chance. Do you think other manufacturers will be able to beat Jio at the pricing game? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
